Dogs are known as “man’s best friend.” Sometimes in dreams they can represent a best friend. The important thing with all animals in dreams is to pay attention to the actions, attitudes, and characteristics of the animal. Dogs will usually represent friendship, loyalty, obedience, or faithfulness. They may also represent someone who is discerning or someone who is very teachable (unless it’s an old dog - Can’t teach an old dog new tricks!)

Remember, no symbol has one absolute meaning. Always look at the context of the dream, if it feels positive or negative and what the specific symbol means to you, if anything.

The specific type of dog may also give you clues.  For instance:

  • Bull Dog – In the positive, it may indicate someone who is persistent and tough. If the context is negative, it may reveal that someone is stubborn, intimidating, mean, or dangerous.
  • Doberman – Someone who is a guardian or very protective, or someone who attacks, is mean, or intimidating.
  • Greyhound - may indicate something that is happening very fast or someone who is quick to obey or disobey, depending on the context.

In ancient Hebraic text, dogs were not pets and were usually used symbolically to represent people who were backbiters (gossips and those who spoke evil of others), or someone who is going back to old habits and ways that are not good. You will find that in scripture, the most important thing to do is keep the imagery being used in context.
